Spanish or Castilian (español or castellano)
is an Iberian Romance language and the second most spoken language
in the world. Spanish is derived from Latin. Spaniards tend to refer
to the language as castellano when contrasting it with the
other languages of Spain, namely Galician,
French, Portuguese, and Italian are also romance languages. Spanish is a phonetic language,
words are pronounced exactly as they are spelled.
According to Ethnologue Spanish is the second language in the world, after Mandarin Chinese and ahead of English. Spanish is spoken by more than 400 million people worldwide, primarily in Spain and Latin America. Spanish is the official language in 24 countries, with over 323 million native speakers.
