Portuguese History
Portuguese is predominately spoken in Angola, Brazil, Cape Verde, East Timor,
Guinea Bissau, Macao (region of China), Mozambique, Portugal, and
Sao Tome and Principe. There is also Portuguese populations in the USA,
UK, Luxembourg, Switzerland, Germany, Venezuela, South Africa,
Canada, Australia and the Channel Islands, particularly Jersey and
Guernsey.
The lusófono world (Portuguese speakers) is estimated today between 190 and 230 million people.
Portuguese is the eighth most spoken language in the world, third between the occidental languages, after
English and Spanish Castilian languages.
Portuguese is the official language in eight countries of four continents:
* Angola (10,9 million)
* Brazil (185 million)
* Cabo Verde (415,000)
* Guiné Bissau (1,4 million)
* Mozambique (18,8 million)
* Portugal (10,5 million)
* Sao Tomé and Príncipe (182,000)
* East Timor (800, 000).
