Places Where You Will Hear French Being Spoken

NORTH AMERICA

Canada - Canada is a fully bilingual country and French and English are the officia/l languages throughout Canada. However, you will hear French spoken almost exclusively in the areas of Québec and Acadia. 94% speak French in Quebec where Montreal is loacted.

Haiti - Haiti gained its independence from France in 1825 for 150 million francs. The official languages are French and Haitian Creole.

United States - In the northeast part of Maine, a remnant of Canadian French has spilled over and is spoken by locals.

In the state of Maine, the city of Madawaska – 84% of the 4,534 population are French-speaking. In Fort Kent, Maine, 61% of the 4,233 population, in Van Buren, 79% of its 2,631 residents, and in Frenchville, 80% of its 1225 residents speak French.

In the state of Louisiana, the St. Martin Parish, 27.4% of it 48,583 population are French-speaking, in the Evangeline Parish – 25.7% of 35,434 people , and in the Vermilion Parish – 24.9% of 53,934 residents speak French.

EUROPE

Andorra - Catalan as its official language although 7% of its populaiton near the border of France speak French.

Belgium - has three official languages, Dutch, French, and German. The southern part of Belgium is where you'll find French spoken mostly. There are a few small differences in pronunciation but, by and large the French spoken in Belgium will sound similar to French spoken in France.

France - Needless to say most people who speak French are in France.

Italy - Western Italy, in particular in the province of Aosta Valley ( Valle D'Aosta ) residents speak French.

Luxembourg - Separating Germany from the northern border of France is Luxembourg. The country has three official languages Luxembourgish, German and French. However, French is the only language of legislation.

Monaco - Monaco is country of only 2.02 km and fully surrounded by France and the Cote d' Azur. The official language is French.

Switzerland - True for its recognition of being unbiased, Switzerland features four official languages consisting of French, Italian, German and Romansh. You can hear French in Biel, Fribourg

MIDDLE EAST

Lebanon - Arabic, French and English are official languages

 

AFRICA

Benin - Given its independence from France in 1960, the official language remains French.

Burkina Faso - Same as above.

Burundi - The three official languages are Swahili and Kirundi, and French. Burundi was granted independence in 1962 from Belgium.

Cameroon - The official languages of Cameroon are French and English.

Central African Republic - French and the African language of Sango are spoken here. This country was liberated from France in 1958.

Chad- French and Arabic are the official languages, although, there are more than 100 languages spoken.

The Comoros - These four islands in African recognize Arabic and French as the official language.

Democratic Republic of Congo - Formerly a colony of Belgium, Lingala and French are the official languages.

Djibouti - Declaring its independence in 1977 from France, French and Arabic are the primary languages.

Côte d'Ivoire, Gabon, Guinea, Mali, Republic of Congo

, French is the only official language. Similar to a lot of other African countries in the region, it used to be a French colony and declared its independence from France in 1960.

Madagascar - an island country has three official languages, which are English, Malagasy and French.

Niger - has two official languages, Hausa and French.

Rwanda - three official languages Kinyarwanda, French or English in the part of Africa.

Senegal - French is the official language of Senegal, other recognized regional language are Wolof, Soninke, Serer, Fula, Maninka, and Jola

Seychelles - Officially it is French and Seselwa Creole French as well as English.

Togo - French is the lone official language of Togo, although you'll likely find Ewe, Mina, Kabye and Dagomba spoken too.

ASIA

Spoken by a small minority in Cambodia, Laos in (Luang Prabang and Vientiane), Puducherry, and Vietnam (only a small population as it used to be a second language)
