Japan, also know as Nippon, is made up of of four main islands and 4,000 smaller islands, notably Okinawa. Honshu, by far the largest and most populated island, is typically divided into five regions. The other islands are not divided into sub-regions. Japan has a modern transportation system that connects the main islands. The Seikan tunnel, world's largest at 33 miles, connects Honshu to Hokkaido. The hi-speed trains, also called bullet trains, connect the major urban areas.
