The Portuguese culture has a long, rich and diversified
tradition which, by itself, is a sufficient reason to learn Portuguese. Not too
many people know that Portuguese is the sixth most spoken language in the world, It is spoken by
approximately 200 million people all over the world: Portugal, Brazil, Africa
(West sub-Saharan and East Africa), Asia (India, Sri Lanka, East Timor, Malaysia
and Macau) and, of course by many immigrants in Canada and in the United States.
The Portuguese established a large and very influential hold in Africa as
witnessed today by many Lusophone countries such as the Cape Verde Islands,
Guinea-Bissau, São Tomé and Príncipe, Angola and Mozambique; in India there are
still remnants of Indo-Portuguese speech communities in Goa, Dio, Damão and
Korlai.
The importance of learning Portuguese has other reasons too. First, by overcoming the language barrier you will gain a better understanding of the Portuguese people and culture. Secondly, knowing Portuguese is a great asset in many areas such as medical care, business, law or local government. For example, Portuguese is one of the official languages of the European Union and MERCOSUR (a trade alliance of several Latin-american countries that includes Brazil), thus offering the ones who speak Portuguese a competitive edge over those unfamiliar with the language.
Learning Portuguese will open up many other possibilities, both intellectual and practical ones, that you will experience as you progress when studying the language.Since spanish is considered its sister language, It has been said that fluent spanish speakers can become very good speakers of portuguese in approximately three months.
