  In the 18th and 19th centuries XVIII, detached itself in the cities, that were developing and increasing demographically, two rhythms musicals that marked the history of the MPB: the lundu and the popular song. The lundu, of African origin, possuía a strong sensual character and a rhythmic slam dancer. Already the popular song, of Portuguese origin, brought the melancholy and spoke of love in a slam calms and scholarly. In the second half of the 19th century, arises the Crying or choro music, from the mixture of the lundu, of the popular song and of the ballroom dancing european. In 1899, the singer Chiquinha Gonzaga composes the song Opens Wings, one of the more acquaintances goes carnival of the history. 

Already in the beginning of the 20th century , begin it arise the bases than would be the samba. From the hills and the slums of the Rio de Janeiro, begin to be mixed the samba rhythm and wheels of capoeira with the pagodas and the slams in homage to the Orishas. The television began itself popularize in middle part of the decade of 1960, influencing in the song. In this epoch, the TV Record organized the Festival of Brazilian Popular Music. In these festivals are thrown Milton Birth, Elis Regina, Chico Buarque of Holland, Caetano Veloso and Edu Wolf. In this same period, the TV Record throws the program Young musical Guard, where emerge the singers Roberto Carlos and Erasmo Carlos and the singer Wanderléa.
 In the decade of 1970, several musicians begin it be successful in the four corners of the country. Nara Lion records music of Director and Nelson of the Ukelele. Comings of the Bahia, Gal Costa and Maria Bethânia are successful in the big cities. The even it happens with Djavan (coming of Alagoas), Fafá of Belém (coming of him Stop), Clear Nunes (of Mines General), Second-hand dealer and Fagner (both of him Will Dine), Alceu Valença (of Pernambuco) and Elba Ramalho (of the Laborer). It is of this period the group Paralamas of the Success, Urban Legion, Titãs, Kid Bee, RPM, Rude common people, Offence to Severity, Initial Capital, Engineers of the Hawaii, Anger! and Red Baron. Also they are successful Cazuza, Rita Lee, Lulu Holy, Marine Lima, Lobão, Cássia Eller, Zeca Pagodinho and Raul Seixas. 

The decade of 1990 also is marked by the growth and success of the song sertaneja or country. In this context, with a strong romantic character, emerge in the setting musical: Chitãozinho and Xororó, Zezé di Camargo and Luciano, Leandro and Leonardo and João Paulo and Daniel. In this epoch, in the setting rap detach itself: Gabriel, o Pensador, THE Rappa, Planet Hemp, Rational MCs and Pavilion 9.
